Not only is this species of fish interesting in appearance from the textures of the outside body, but it also has a unique feature that sets it apart from other sea creatures.
The Velvetfish is known for the large dorsal fin that it has. Most all fish have a dorsal fin(6), but the Velvetfish is unique in that it starts at the very top of its head and extends all the way down. This fin helps the Velvetfish navigate throughout its environment, and it can also be an extra advantage and assistance in getting its prey and fleeing from potential predators.(7) If the Velvetfish was a human, we think it would be pretty into mohawks!

What’s incredibly strong, has a large stinger, has virtually no predators, and is a wasp? It’s the Velvet Ant!
That’s correct, although the Velvet Ant has the word ant, it is indeed a wasp. Perhaps this insect that starts with the letter V got its name due to its ant-like shape; but come on, even Scientists have to admit it’s a little confusing.
As far as tough insects go, the Velvet Ant really takes the cake. With one of the largest stingers in the wasp species, an incredibly hard and difficult to capture exoskeleton, and poisonous venom from its stinger, there isn’t a critter in the animal kingdom playground that would want to mess with this insect!
