Insects & Spiders that Start with the letter R
If you saw Pixar’s animated filme A Bug’s Life, you may recognize the loveable and wholesome blue beetle Dim in the picture up above, for he is a Rhinoceros Beetle! As you can see from the photo, the male Rhinoceros Beetles have quite the daring horn. These horns are used to protect their mate during mating season, but in particular countries in Asia they’re also used for another. At times, people will use two Rhinoceros Beetles and place their bets on which one will knock the other one over first. (7) Can you imagine walking into that chanting section?

Mammals that Start with the letter R
For our mammals that start with the letter R spotlight, we’re going to be checking out the interesting Ring-tailed lemur! One of the most famous Ring-tailed Lemurs around is the hilarious and charismatic character King Julien from the Dream Works Madagascar series.
Even though the character King Julien is a male, we’re going to take a moment to talk about female Ring-tailed Lemurs. These creatures are actually the dominance of the Ring-tailed Lemur groups, which can be as many as 26 Lemurs. This is fairly unique in the animal kingdom, and the female Ring-tailed Lemurs don’t take it for granted. They have dibs on food, friendships, and mates. Speaking of friendships, the female Ring-tailed Lemur develops and builds their friendships with other females by grooming each others fur. (8) Anyone else thinking, slumber party vibes?

Reptiles that Start with the letter R
When someone says the word snake, what’s the first one that pops in your head? Majority of people may call out the fearsome Rattlesnake, and how could you not?! Check that beast out!
The well-known rattle of the rattle snake is used mostly for defense, to scare off predators (Did you know that the Roadrunner we talked about earlier sometimes hunts Rattlesnakes? What a crazy bird!) but there’s a far more interesting fact to gather about this feature. Snakes shed their skin a fair amount of times in its life, and for the Rattlesnake each time it does a new part on the rattle, found at the end of its tail, develops. (9) Almost how you can tell how old a tree is by the rings of it’s exposed stump; how neat is that?
